Mr. Andrew Frederick
My 32-year teaching career has focused on serving mentally and hearing impaired students in a variety of teaching environments. I have built a solid educational foundation for my work as a result of service in many diverse settings.

My career began at Lapeer Intermediate School District, in Lapeer, Michigan as a full-time teacher at a state operated institution. Key assets to my success as a teacher of severely, multi-handicapped students were my strong organizational skills and my ability to interact with residential staff, school personnel, and two teacher assistants.

I was the first full-time school employee and liaison for Hillsdale Intermediate School District placed in a private workshop. I developed an unprecedented academic training program which benefited Mentally Impaired clients in the workplace and in life. I created a Shop Store, owned and operated by the students who ordered materials, wrote checks, and computed daily balances and profits.

Years later, I was hired as the founding Director/Counselor of the Title XX Long Term Work Adjustment program at Flint Goodwill Industries, Inc. I managed client vocational skills for a diverse group of individuals, and I provided a link between Goodwill Industries and community work placement.

As a tenure teacher for Flint Community Schools, I provided in-depth instruction for Elementary and Middle School Learning Disabled and Cognitively Impaired students in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. My significant accomplishments included coordinating the 8th Annual Kid’s Conference for the Michigan Association of Middle School Educators. I am especially proud of an audio-visual presentation made with my students reenacting the book, “Where the Red Fern Grows.” It resulted in an unprecedented presentation to students, staff, and community.

I moved to Chicago in 1991 to accept a position as Child Life Educational Specialist for La Rabida Children’s Hospital. This unique setting provided me with an opportunity to develop educational services and objectives for a wide range of ages, levels, and disabilities. In 11 years there, my accomplishments included developing Learning Center Dollars, a reinforcement and incentive program of instruction, baking, managing money, and leisure time with the teacher. To this day, I encounter adults who were my student-patients at La Rabida and who still talk about this. I also established a closed circuit in-hospital educational channel, broadcasting to patients’ bedsides. My programs integrated commercial and student produced videos with live programs via video camera. I was recognized as the hospital’s “Heart of the Month” in gratitude for my dedication to children.

I accepted a position as a Home/Hospital Teacher for Chicago Public Schools in 2000 and was assigned to Children’s Memorial Hospital. My six years as a Home/Hospital teacher required me to coordinate services with the students’ school personnel in Chicago and across the United States. I taught all grade levels and disabilities in a variety of environments including intensive care units, cancer units, rehabilitation departments, dialysis facilities, and a private residential facility for children.

In my three years at Gale Math and Science Academy with Teacher Assistants, Ms. Rodriquez and Ms. Sears and Nurse Ms. Plummer, we have built a stimulating and motivating learning environment that promotes success. Instruction reinforces individualized educational goals which correspond to State Goals and Illinois Alternate Performance objectives. A multi-sensory approach is utilized in individualized or group instruction and students are allowed to progress at their own pace. Progress is observed and charted and written progress reports, report cards and grades are given using modified grading criteria. Frequent consultations with related services personnel are held to reinforce students’ individualized Occupational, Physical Therapy and Speech and Language goals in the classroom. Every opportunity during the school day is utilized to promote integrating and social interaction with regular education students. I have always pushed the boundaries of the envelope, to help the students I have had the honor to instruct, achieve success. Our door is always open, so please feel free to stop by room 150.
