Abstract:

When we look at stars, galaxies, and planets, we are not looking “back in time” toward the birth of the Universe. We are simply observing different locations within a still-developing cosmic structure. The Big Bang does not exist as a place that can be pointed to. Its original location has vanished, and the radiation emitted at that moment has passed irretrievably beyond us.

You are correct Clive. "Looking back x-billion years" is bragging talk. The lense sees photons arriving here and now without any dating information stamped on them. To find distances we must use triangulation methods.
