Abstract:
Despite the empirical validation of Fresnel’s formula, through the experiments of Fizeau (1851) and Airy (1871), the physical model by which Fresnel arrived at his formula was criticized by several scientists of the time. In 1872 Mascart even requested the replacement of Fresnel’s partially entrained ether model with other physical models, leading to the same or a slightly different formula. In this paper, the “delay-time” model is presented. It was developed starting from the “time-delay” model of the Italian scientists Giuseppe Antoni and Umberto Bartocci. Within this model, a new formula for the speed of light through a moving optical medium was derived. Theoretical predictions based on this formula were compared with the results of the Fizeau experiment of 1851.
